FSBlog: What was the ‘drive’, that created BoneTown? (and later, ‘d-dub’)

Hod: A lot of free thinking. We knew we had a good idea and that we were filling a niche that was bound to be filled eventually, but that no one had really had the balls yet to do. From there we realized that since we would be an Adults Only game we could do whatever we wanted, so we got to make all the rules. We wanted to make a game that was fun, first and foremost, and that gave adult gamers something made for them and not for kids.

FSBlog: When you realised how much controversy the development of BoneTown had generated, did that scare any of you? Did you think someone was going to pull the plug…or worse?

Hod: Oh yea. The world’s filled with a lot of whackos who have killed people for offending their morality and offending morality is exactly what we set out to do, so it was slightly worrisome. We tried to keep everything funny to show that we’re just joking around, but there is definitely
something in the game that is going to offend pretty much everyone out there. We followed the example of South Park in many regards, but we will never even touch Mohammad because a joke is never worth dying for.

FSBlog: BoneTown was a large project for such a small an independent games studio. Did you have to hire a QA team, or did you all test the game?

Hod: You have to hire people. The people who develop games are horrible testers. We know too much so we can’t have a subjective perspective on it.

FSBlog: Were there any adult movies that had any influence on BoneTown’s world, sex or characters?

Hod: I wouldn’t say any movie in particular, more that the entire industry itself influenced us. The whole development team was filled with guys who have watched the internet porn industry be created, from the days of trading pics on AOL to the Tube Sites of today. We all partook in it so
we had a good idea of what was good and what was bad and what should make it in the game.

Hod: We’ve talked to a fair amount of people and lots of them are excited about possibly being involved with the future of BoneTown, but we don’t have any specifics lined up right now. We also enjoyed the excitement that our Tiger Woods Affair Tour game generated, so at the moment we are really interested in celebrity scandal and the parodies we can do with that.

FSBlog: We understand your dream is to have BoneTown downloadable on XBL and PSN, but what would you say if Sony and Microsoft managed to get an ‘AO’ label on it, were up for releasing the game…but only if all drug related gameplay was removed?

Hod: We’d take out the drugs if that was the only thing holding it back. We’d turn it into smoking cigarettes or whatever was ‘kosher.’ People would know what we were talking about and the game is about a lot more than that.

FSBlog: We absolutely loved BoneTown and were genuinely blown away, with how realistic the sex is. Will we ever see BoneTown 2 and if so, any
rough idea on how long we’ll have to wait for it?

Hod: We’d love to do BoneTown 2, but I can’t really tell you anything about how soon we might be able to do it.  We’d like to do it and we know thefans would love to see it, but getting back into development of a whole new game is really a matter of the logistics and finances more than the
desire to do it. Right now we’re just concentrating on getting BoneTown out there and we’ll see from there.

FSBlog: Could you please tell us of any other adult projects, that d-dub have planned for the PC or any other console?

Hod: We’re working on some new things, but the ones we’re doing right now are mostly on a smaller scale and supplemental to the original BoneTown game. It’s mostly flash and mobile type of stuff with the signature BoneTown humor and fun–hopefully you’ll see them out soon.

Your first objective, is to meet Uzi on the dock, to get briefed for your first mission…but if you’re like us, you’ll spend a bit of time, wondering around BoneTown. You’ll be equipped with a map, which displays the locations of mission, power moves (which your character can learn, by defeating enemies), hookers (we love this game) and cash earning opportunities. It’s when BoneTown finally opens up to you, that you realise it’s what GTA was lacking. Yes, you could steal cars, fly choppers and take part in police chases, but a babe wiggling her as at you, is as far as GTA could go.

Missions are indicated with a star, powermoves by a blue fist, lips are hookers and the disc is a save point (the rest are bonuses, so go and explore!). You’re first objective will have you downing some potion, from a guy named ‘Uzi’. This guy is all against ‘The Man’ and will stop at nothing to bring him down. The potion he gives you, will allow you to take the identity of anyone you knock unconscious, around BoneTown. Once they’re out cold, you’re shown their fighting stats and ball stats, compared to your current identity. We think it’s a cool and refreshing idea, to allow the player to change their character model and stats, at any time. Nice touch, d-dub!

BoneTown isn’t just slack on the public sex, either. Throughout the game, you’ll be collecting and buying a huge stash of drugs, that temporarily enhance your players abilities. For example, weed makes you jump higher and mushrooms make you invincible to enemy attacks. When you complete mission, or win a street brawl, you’ll collect money from your enemies. You then use this cash to spend on these aids, as well as beer and spirits (which temporarily enhance your ball size).

As well as enhancing items, you’ll be able to find collectables, that are scattered throughout every town or area. These can vary from fairground tickets, to casino tokens. You’ll also see a ‘blue fist’ on your map. This  represents the location of an enemy, that once defeated, will give up a special ability. The abilities you’ll obtain, will be invaluable skills, such as smashing and throwing beer bottles, to creating lightning storms…from out you’re ass!. We heavily recommend hunting these enemies down, and collecting ALL the powermoves. We say this, because there are a few gameplay points, where these skills are needed to progress and without them, you’re going to be exiting and re-loading a lot…you’ve been warned.

Strutting your stuff around BoneTown, will also reward you with some hilarious artwork. A menu will pop up, but the game will still continue in the background (not so good if you need a pee, or someone disturbs you). Also, a certain two-part mission, lacked a save point, so we had to start the whole mission again, a few times  (and it’ was a tough one). It won’t exactly take ages to get back to where you were, but it would be nice to save mid-way. These however, are minor issues, that could easily be solved by a small patch.

BoneTown is a great blend of basic and addictive gameplay, which can offer a steep difficulty at times (and that’s actually refreshing, for an adult game). The game really does offer, an intense and erotic fantasy escapism, that will have you thinking you’re playing an interactive adult movie. You’ll really be amazed at how hot BoneTown can get, especially if you’re used to playing adult web games.

We feel sorry for the independent mobile game developers, who have busted a gut developing adult games for the iPhone, to now be told that they can’t make a single penny back, for all their hard work.

We really feel that Apple should reconsider this ban. Yes, it will take resources to develop a reliable age restriction system, but the money they’d make back from it, would be well worth the effort.
